HIT THE ROAD!

St Martin/St Maarten has everything you need for a perfect vacation and transport is certainly not lacking.

With battalions of good rental agencies, you can get wheeled-up with anything from a nippy little runaround to a monster sized Hummer and everything in between. Jeeps are very popular as they are well build for the island roads and there is nothing better than flipping the top down so you can tan while you tour. Most of the big rental agencies are located along the airport road but you can ask your hotel or villa agent to arrange a car for you upon your arrival. Most agencies will require a credit card or cash deposit upon collection of your vehicle – and of course a valid driving licence!

First time visitors to the island will find driving an interesting experience as the pace is much slower here – necessarily, as our roads are much smaller and admittedly, some of them could do with some work! Anyway, as you drive round the island, watch out for erroneous potholes, herds of goats or cows traversing at leisure, buses stopping where there are no bus stops and the sporadic use of indicators! American visitors will discover our beloved roundabouts which substitute your crossroads. After a few times going round, you’ll get the hang of them! Most importantly, slip into Caribbean time, take it steady and take in the sights.
